FLOTSAM & JETSAM
line up: Eric A.K. (vocals)
Ed Carlson (guitar)
Mike Gilbert (guitar)
Troy Gregory (bass)
Kelly David Smith (drums)
This thrashband from Phoenix, Arizona is founded in 1984 by drummer Kelly David
Smith and bassplayer Jason Newstedt. Two very good demo's make them famous in
the underground-scene. Songs on compilation albums "Speed Metal Hell II" and
"Metal Massacre VII" do the rest. They get a deal with Metal Blade and in the
summer of '86 the LP "Doomsday for the Deceiver" is released. Much energy, fast
but precise riffs and good compositions are reasons enough to predict the band
a great future. However, end of '86, they get a big set-back when Jason is
asked to take over the bass at Metallica. A big opportunity that he can't
neglect. Sacred Reich bassplayer Phil Rind is willing to play the rest of the
planned concerts. After this Sentinel Beast-bassplayer Mike Spencer is asked to
play bass. During a tour through America and Europe as support act for Megadeth
the band plays well, but the heavy part is the second album: what will the
quality be, now Newstedt is gone? After the first attempts, Spencer has to
leave, because he wants to dominate the rest, as is said by the others. New
bassplayer is Troy Gregory, who was also in the running for Metallica. Finally
in '88 the second album "No Place for Disgrace" is released by the Elektra
label, who have bought the contract from Metal Blade. The somewhat less
compositions are countered with a better production and a more heavy attitude.
European gigs show that F & J is here to stay. After release of an EP (with on
side A the weak Elton John cover "Saturday Night's allright for Fighting", and
on side B live recordings from a Dutch festival) Elektra throws out the band,
because of bad sales. Both Roadrunner and MCA want to sign the band.
